Top 10 iPhone Third Party Jailbreak Apps

December 27th, 2007 · 6 Comments · AppTap, iphone, jailbreak

I am VERY new to the iPhone, I got mine a week ago today- it was actually the first time I had ever seen/held one. I haven’t really let it out of my grasp since I got it, so one might say I’m a bit addicted. Here are the top 10 third party applications I’ve found. These are available AFTER your phone has been jailbroken.

1. Installer – Third party apps wouldn’t be possible on the iPhone without the Jailbreak, but it is implemented SO well by AppTap, or Installer. I LOVE it. It is a source package management system that Linux users will be very familiar with.

2. Term-vt100 - The terminal client lets me explore the file structure on the iPhone, as well as ssh’ing into other servers/linux boxes to check on them from remote. I’m never far from home if I can still log into my server!

3. VNsea - I will be the first to admit that it is relatively difficult to control a desktop computer from the VNsea interface, BUT, it lets me keep an eye on my screen. This came in handy recently while I was encoding a DVD – I was able to watch my progress in real time through the VNC client while I went on with my day.

4. MobileScrobbler - MobileScrobbler is the last.fm client for the iPhone, and I am absolutely enamored with it. Mobile Scrobbler lets you pick a favorite artist, then plays you similar music so you can decide whether you like it or not to build your music repertoire.

5. SwapTunes - SwapTunes is a tool created by the fabulous Erica Sadun that allows you to keep TWO discreet iTunes libraries on your iPhone. The perk? Let’s say you have a computer at home where you store all of your “home” music, and a computer at work where you store your “work” music – SwapTunes allows you to sync with BOTH iTunes libraries and choose which one you want to play from!

6. Mobile Twitterific - Mobile Twitterific is an implementation of the social networking site twitter.com. While it is not quite perfect (I still have trouble twittering from my iPhone), it is really cool to get twitter updates while your on the run.

7. Summerboard - Summerboard is similar to Installer (AppTap) in that it was a necessary tool that just happens to have an AWESOME implementation. Summerboard is what allows you to “flip” screens on the iPhone, allowing more than 16 applications (the capacity of one page) to be installed.

8. NES – The NES emulator for the iPhone is mostly just a novelty, but it is DEFINATELY a seller. I am pretty sure my friend decided to purchase an iPhone tonight when he realized he could play Zelda oldschool on mine. I do have to let prospective users know that it is difficult to control and sometimes jerky, but VERY cool!

9. Navizon – Navizon is an early GPS style tool for the iPhone that allows you to (sometimes) find your coordinates on a map and save that location for future reference. I’m sure this will improve, but right now I can only occasionally locate myself.

10. World – World is not an extensive program, but it keeps your attention by showing a world map and flashing pictures that people have taken with their iPhone and allowed to be shared. It’s a fun time killer. Check out other iapp-a-day toys.

That wraps up my top 10 list, I’d love it if you shared your ideas for other neat apps! BTW – these snapshots were created with another neat package – Screenshot.
