“There is a problem with your iPhone.” after 1.1.3 upgrade

January 30th, 2008 · 34 Comments · iphone, jailbreak

Problem Resolved…

I upgraded to 1.1.3 using the upgrader in the repository on January 30. I did not choose hactivation. The phone worked for a few minutes, then went into Recovery mode; but I believe 1.1.3 is an “improved” recovery mode. The message from iTunes is “There is a problem with your iPhone.”

The hard reset (DFU) method has ABSOLUTELY no effect.

*#307# does NOT work, but *#306# DOES – but it’s modified. I am only allowed to make one call, and there’s no backspace button by the digits.

I CAN ssh in, but I haven’t studied the structure enough to know what’s right or wrong.

iBrickr does not identify a locked phone, and proceeds to display directory contents.

iDemocracy and AppTappInstaller Crashed on Vista. I am currently running AppTapp Installer 2.30 to attempt a restore to 1.0.2. It looks like a possibililty at the moment.

It worked! It Worked!

I have tried SEVERAL configurations of this restore, but what DOES work is AppTapp Installer v2.30 [http://www.nullriver.com/~adam/AppTappInstaller.exe] (standalone) on Windows XP home.

Open iTunes THEN run AppTappInstaller, and as soon as the iTunes screen changes to the regular page (with restore or upgrade), close AppTapp and recover using the Shift+click restore back to 1.1.1.

It worked. I have never been happier to see error 1015 in my life!!!

    SAY YES TO HACKTIVATION!
If you say Yes, even if you have ATT, didn’t unlock it, and do use iTunes… then the upgrade WILL work, you CAN sync with iTunes, and you DON’T get the “There is something wrong with your iPhone” message.

  • Christel

I am having this same exact problem. Only I am on Mac, so hopefully this method will also work for me… Trying it asap.

  • Kyle

Worked great to restore phone.. Now has anyone (or very many) attempted the Official 1.1.3 Upgrader with success? (Hacktivation vs. iTunes Activation) I initially chose iTunes since it was recommended. Not the best recommendation i suppose..

  • Bounmee

So what firmware do i install with apptapp? 1.0.0, 1.0.1, 1.0.2?

  • huanix

I don’t think it matters – i chose 1.0.2, but you’re not actually going to install the firmware – AppTapp will release the iPhone so you can install firmware in iTunes.

  • Kory

Thank you SO much for this!! I had to use a friends Windows computer but it was totally worth it! I was so very worried that I had bricked my phone and was about to go into depression.

  • Ryan

I had to use a friend’s windows machine as well but I have a password on my phone so when I open up iTunes it asks me to enter in the code on the iPhone or else iTunes won’t access the phone.

Did anyone figure out how to fix that?

  • christian

mmm… so this is male love.. :)

    @ Christel

I’m on a Mac. After trying to upgrade from a jailbroken 1.1.2 iPhone to 1.1.3 via the “Official 1.1.3 Upgrade” application listed on Installer.app, iTunes returned the message “There is problem with your iPhone.”

After freaking out a little bit and doing a little web research I stumbled upon this page.

The way I was able to “unbrick” my phone was by simply holding down the menu button and home button at the same time until the phone goes into recovery mode (hold it down past the “turn off” slider… past the grey Apple… until you just see the “plug into iTunes image”).

iTunes then gives you option of downloading the 1.1.3 update (130mb+).

After it downloads, you have the option to restore (Note: If the download takes a while, the phone might turn off while plugged in. If so, you will need to force it back into recovery mode and then iTunes will give you option to restore).

Once it restores, iTunes gives you the option of restoring to the last back up. And after that, you’re back in action.

Note that doing this will “virginize” your phone to 1.1.3 and it will not be jailbroken. But at least your phone will be alive again.

  • Wolf

  • Zolan

Thanks so much. I’ll try this the second I come home. I was so worried when I got the “There is something wrong with you iPhone” message. I really appreciate your effort.

  • Kyle

Wow, I almost just [kid-friendly edit] after this started working for me.
    Thank you.

    Fixed in OSX:

I had this message after up-jailbreaking a jailbroken 1.1.2 to 1.1.3. Couldn’t do any kind of hardware reset, and iTunes wouldn’t let me do anything.

I fixed it by running AppTappInstaller (OSX) and selecting system 1.0.2. After it finished downloading the firmware, I plugged in the iPhone. I got some kind of error message, but the net result is that when iTunes started up it now allowed me to do a real system restore. Which I am doing right now, to version 1.1.3.

I can understand that sinking feeling! Just been through it several times in the last few days.
Unlocked a jailbroken 1.1.2 OTB and tried upgeade to 1.1.3 from 2 sources: iClarified and i.Unlock.no
iClarified: had space problems (even though I had just the official Apple apps + Installer). But a hard reboot later, got into 1.1.3. But Installer was gone! Icon replaced with a default Application icon (page with pen). And Installer would not launch. And Contacts would not sync from iTunes. But everything else – phone, sms, safari, you tube, etc.–worked. Since Installer was not working, couldn’t use the Sync patch either. Had no option but to restore to 1.1.1
i.Unlock.no: This time, tried iphone.unlock.no, and it was certainly much easier to jailbreak, unlock and upgrade to 1.1.2. Thereafter tried the Official Upgrader 1.1.3 from Installer. Took about 4 hours (on broadband), but finally got done. So here I was with an unlocked, fully functional iPhone in 1.1.3 at last! Then I got a pop up saying a new version of Installer was available, and of course I updated. DISASTER!!!
Suddenly, I was in a locked screen with the dreaded un-jailbroken screen, with iTunes saying “There is a problem with your iPhone” and that it needed to be “repaired”.
Sleep+Home button immediately. Again and again. And again. Finally got DFU recognized by iTunes. Downgraded to 1.1.1, jailbroke, unlocked, upgraded to 1.1.2
So that’s where I am now; a functioning 1.1.2 OTB phone using a Vodafone SIM in a non-US, non-European country.
Trying to work up the courage to try a 1.1.3 upgrade again!

I bought an iPhone V 1.0.2 (1C28), Modem Firmware 04.01.13_G, it was already unlocked but I don’t know which procedure was used to unlock it, but at that time installer Apps was not on my phone. The shopkeeper installed Installer after 10 days of purchasing.
Now I wanna upgrade my iPhone to 1.1.4, so help me. Also installer apps stopped working after I upgraded the same.
    I am confused. Help me.

  • huanix

it sounds like your problem might be related to iTunes, not the device. Do you have another computer that you could try this on, or could you re-install itunes?

  • Iris121

Thank you so much. I was about to cry until I came to this post. You are amazing and I love you!!!

  • emr23

Yeah, it worked, thanx for all. . .
