3g iPhone Jailbreak drama: iphone-dev, GeoHotz, and some kid named Zibri

July 13th, 2008 · No Comments

I don’t generally talk about current news here, but the drama behind the 3g iPhone jailbreak is driving me nuts. Here’s a play-by play, as I understand it (I’m no insider, i’ve just been curious about the process) - it would be neat to add dates to this in the future for nostalgia..

  1. Original iPhone Released
  2. iphone-dev, with GeoHotz (George Hotz) begin the process of unlocking/jailbreaking.
  3. GeoHotz gets booted from the iphone-dev team
  4. GeoHotz releases his own version of the unlock called “gunlock”
  5. Zibri adds an easy interface to gunlock and posts the app - garnering much of the credit in the process - ziphone.org

Fast Forward to July 2008:

  1. iphone 3g is released 7/11/2008.
  2. iphone-dev and George Hotz independently (but still sharing) develop the 3g jailbreak/unlock process. (created before the release of the iPhone, but not quite ready for mainstream release) 7/13/2008
  3. GeoHotz is anxious to get the product out on the network, so he sets up a site taunting iphone-dev that he will release his process on Tuesday, July 15, 2008 @ 11:00am CST if iphone-dev doesn’t release theirs.

Now we wait. Whatever happens, it looks like we’ll have a jailbreak/unlock by Tuesday!
