All I had to do was set the filter in VBox. Make sure that your user name is added to the vboxusers group, so you can use USB.
Host: Ubuntu 11.10
Guest: Windows 7 x64
VBox 4.1.6

Opensuse 11.1 / Vbox 4.0-4.0.0_69161 / Win XP SP3
itunes 10.5 flashing ipod touch 4th gen with ios 5.0

iPod kept cycling between recovery mode and DFU.
Applied the recommendations above (USB filter with just idVendor and Name, plus started vbox as root, and also ran itunes as admin fwiw) still cycling.
Add this to the list: Watch \Doc*\\Applic*\Apple*\Updater Logs*\* and when it says DFU Restoring followed by success, disconnect the USB virtual in vbox, and it will come right back in recovery mode. In my case it finally began restoring and now iOS5 is installed along with the apps restored. Hurrah!

Hi, I had the same problem with the error 1611. The error appears due to some USB access right problem when switching the IPad to recovery mode.

After hours of work I was manage to resolve the problem on my IPad by simply starting Virtual Box as root (sudo).

It worked for me on Ubuntu Linux using Itunes 10 and Virtual Box 3.2 together with my brand new IPad.

Trying to upgrade from V3 to the latest V3.x. The above instructions allow phone to reconnect ok but still fails with either error 13 or 1611. Phone is now a paper weight:( Does anyone have any ideas how to progress this?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 with VirtualBox V3.08 and a WinXP guest with iTunes on it.

Cheers,

It works great - thanks!!!. Being a long way from home and AT&T, you just saved me being phoneless for another 4 weeks (which is how long its been so far).
I think axkiller really got it with the USB filter so that the device reconnects automatically without having to watch it. Fatrix and jimmy also helped by suggesting trying one more time. It seems that the first one or two times you might get an error 1601 or 1611. Then just enough of the initial restore seems to 'take' to let the real restore to kick in.
BTW I'm using Ubuntu 9.04, VirtualBox 2.2.4 and guest Windows 2003 OS (with a hack of the iTunes install to let it install on that OS).
THANKS!
