The future of syncing iPod and iPhone on Linux

December 4th, 2008 · 2 Comments · Linux, iPod, iTunes, iphone, ubuntu

I started a wiki to track the different methods that we might successfully sync our 4th generation iPod, iPod touch, and iPhone in Linux.

I am actually working on getting iTunes to work in wine: http://www.huanix.com/sync-in-linux/index.php/ITunes_8_through_modified_Wine

For the record: I am not currently working on this project. You are free to use the resources or ask questions, but I am moving on! I will be glad to share access on the wiki with anyone that wants to work on this. -hb

So last year, this is a topic i was hoping your site would become a hub for, but it seems nothing has really moved forward on this topic in about 6 or 8 months-ish. I read over on Dennis Krul’s site (http://krul.nu) that there is a project called iFuse (http://matt.colyer.name/projects/iphone-linux/index.php?title=Main_Page) , maybe you could add this to the very comprehensive wiki page you created.

Thanks to you i was able to live in linux and virtual box my way to running itunes for the iphone. i love my phone in most ways but some defficiencies are apparent (though 3.0 firmware brings copy & paste apparently! )

Anyway, lets see if we can push some progress through and get native iphone usb support in libgpod and let us run the great open source apps that are around for our ubuntu/suse/debian/fedora etc etc. systems to be our primary music/podcast managers.

Hey dude – i appreciate your perspective. The truth is that I recognized that the iTunes sync thing is out of my league – at least for the time I’m able to commit to it. I did what I could and I am happy for others to benefit from what I learned and do the real heavy lifting.
