My wife inherited my old iPhone 3G, which has worked fine for almost two years. Recently, the phone developed a bad habit of crashing and hanging on a blinking red low battery screen. My wife states that in some cases the battery reports that it has full juice even when it is near empty.
I suspect the battery is bad and have ordered a new one from dealextreme, which should arrive in a few weeks.
In the meantime, I discovered a simple way to get out of the hung screen.
When the phone is stuck on the screen with the low battery indicator, it will shut itself off after three blinks. Start this process with the phone in the off mode (very easy)
- Allow the phone to shut off.
- Plug the phone into a usb powered port on the computer (I don’t believe iTunes needs to be runing(?), but this does NOT work in an AC outlet!)
- Press and hold both the home and power button until the power cycles. In just a few moments you should see the boot logo!
This method is simple, but may require some tweaking.. please let me know what worked for you.

Had the same problem. If the mains plug icon is blinking, this means the phone is not getting enough juice from your USB port. Basically, the voltage is low.
If you’re using the front USB ports on a desktop computer, some old laptop, or any computer with many USB devices plugged in same time, that’s the problem.
Plug the USB cord directly behind the desktop PC (on the motherboard), remove all unnecessary USB devices. Or simply use the wall charger that came with the phone.
And don’t forget to thank me
Thank u very much it works perfect. thank u again.
thanks it worked!
thanks
S.O.S. i have problems with my iphone 3GS 16g is dosen’t work 3G , Blue Toth and i have this message when i start the iphone “Charging is not supported with this accessory” and i don’t have anything plug,,,
THANKS ALOT I APPLYED YOUR SUGGESTION AND I GOT MY IPHONE IN NORMAL MOOD THANK ALOT GOD WILL ALWAYS BLESS YOU …
I had this problem as well. Was plugging the iphone in an kept getting both the “USB device drawing too much power” on my mac (no notice when plugged into a Windows PC…) and yet it would charge with neither. Wall charger would not charge it either. Big commonality was the blinking red battery “juice” level icon, the red “low charge” portion blinking…finally came across another forum where a poster said he realized his daughter had chewed the cord a little and it was damaged. This was the case with my 99 cent cheapie special from eBay…switched it out with another cheapie and it works fine, so I guess the lesson is that the cheaper they are, the sooner they fall…or fail…or something like that.
What really tipped me off was that at a certain point, I would get the “drawing too much power” notice when JUST the cable itself was plugged in…obviously must have had an internal electrical short or something…
Caveat emptor, I guess!
